Restoring Pride in Culture: The Henry St. Project

The restoration of a threatened property on Henry Street in the City of Kingston creates an opportunity to establish a cultural venue in Midtown Kingston, as well as herald the revitalization of historic structures in that part of the city. The Burger-Matthews house is representative of Kingston’s rise as an important shipping and manufacturing city and subsequent decline as the age of industry faded. The neglect and threats to this house parallel the decline of cities and the struggle of peoples of African descent.  The restoration of this property by TRANSART represents the reversal of that trend.
