Jazz in the Valley 2008

A Sunday afternoon of jazz, August 17th, 2008 at the Husdon Valley Resort & Spa Kerhonkson, New York.

FEATURING: Louis Hayes' Cannonball Legacy Band, Marlena Shaw, Larry Harlow and the Latin Legends Orchestra, and Maurice Brown Effect.

Louis Hayes picture

Louis Hayes' Cannonball Legacy Band with Vincent Herring & Jeremy Pelt Hayes is a jazz survivor and a swinging one at that. His longtime associations with many a jazz legend including Horace Silver, Cannonball Adderley and Oscar Peterson have solidified Hayes' living legend status. Louis Hayes is the only one still alive from Cannonball Adderley's original band. So we went into a club and had different alto saxophonists every night, but Vincent Herring - he had been appearing with Cannonball's brother Nat for years - got together with him and put this Louis Hayes Cannonball Legacy Band together.

Marlena Shaw picture

Marlena Shaw is among the most versatile and charismatic jazz vocalists on the scene today. The first woman vocalist ever signed to Blue Note Records, where she made five albums along with hit singles like "Wade in the Water," "California Soul," and "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" (which she co-wrote, and which first brought her to Count Basie's attention). While everyone agrees that Marlena Shaw is a national treasure, it's difficult to categorize her. Both Downbeat and Record World have named her "Best Female Singer."

Larry Harlow picture

Larry Harlow is a true living legend of Afro-Cuban music. Orquesta Harlow, was the second orchestra signed to the Fania Label, Harlow is also producer/pianist for the legendary Fania All-Stars. He produced over 260 alblums for Fania Records and revolutionized what is known today as Salsa by merging latin, afro-cuban and jazz music. Harlow developed the explosive, Tumpet / trombone sound of the contemporary salsa bands in the early 70's. He was the first to introduce the sacred bata' drums of the Yoruba religion in Cuba to secular Afro-Cuban dance music in NYC. Larry Harlow on the piano with the 12 member Latin Legends Orchestra that will include Bobby Sanabria - timbales, Eddie Montalvo - Congas, Louie Bauzo - bongos/bata.

Maurice Brown Effect picture

An equally masterful trumpeter, composer, producer and bandleader at just 25 years old, Maurice Brown is sure to make an influential mark on jazz and the world beyond for many years to come. "Maurice Brown is one of the most exciting young trumpeters in jazz - be it New Orleans or New York. His improvisations are fresh, his chops dynamic and he's writing what could very well become a new generation of hard-bop-meets-new- grooves standards," DownBeat Magazine.
