RELATIONSHIPS: African Art & Communication

This panel exhibit examines traditional Africa’s legacy of writing and illustrates its ability to communicate through art. Color photographs of antiquities and samples of formal and informal writing systems reveal that communication was and is profound and consistant.

N
othing in Africa can be mentioned without understanding its style of communication and its relationship to all people and the universe. This exhibit examines the traditional relationships of a culture based on cosmology, mythology, oral tradition and art. It illustrates the power of words and symbols. Language is an art; writing is an art; imaging is an art (making pictures, sculptures, tapestries) in traditional Africa all these are functional and in this exhibit can be enjoyed.
