WORSHOP OVERVIEW


Workshops are for children in grades 1 through 12. TRANSART urges educational facilities to utilize these workshops for Professional Development and Teacher Training Workshops when creating mulitcultural curriculums. Workshops are constructed to suit your needs (hourly, full day, half day).

   
  MUSIC WORKSHOPS            
AFRICAN INSTRUMENTS

Grades K-12
45-90min.
Lecture demonstration.
An introduction to African instruments and their relationship to European instruments. Workshop includes idiophone, membranophone, chordiophone and aeriophone instruments.

JAZZ IS

Grades K-12
90 min.
Lecture demonstration.
An introduction to America’s original art form. Jazz history with emphasis on jazz styles and vocals with a professional Jazz trio..

 
JAZZ TUNE UP

Grades 9-12
3 hours
Lecture demonstration and concert with a professional jazz sextet. An overview of various jazz styles where students interact and play with a professional Jazz Ensemble. Emphasis is on sight reading, phrasing and most importantly improvisation and interpretation. (Technical requirements of host include sound system with five microphone with amplifier and speakers).


   
 
JAZZ TUNE UP II

3 hours
Workshops for Student Bands.
Critique and working on trouble spots with a professional Jazz musician. Emphasis on improvisation and interpretation.
             
  TRADITIONAL ARTS WORKSHOPS      
 
AFRICAN WORLD TEXTILES

Hands on experience studying batik, adire, tie dye, adinkra printing, weaving and identifying ancestral fabrics. (Room must have water and sinks).
 

RHYTHM AND RHYMES In AFRICA & THE AMERICAS

Influences of World Music, Blues and Calypso on the rhythms and rhymes of children and teenagers. Hands on experience making and learning to play traditional instruments. (shekeres, djembes, clave sticks, etc.)

 

MYTHS AND STORIES ACROSS CULTURES

The oral tradition in Africa, the Caribbean and Americas. Storytelling as art, history and teaching tool.
